Map Key:

  • Green: Districts that either had gains, no loss and/or a very small loss in one subject when compared to nearby districts. These districts typically have smaller populations of free and reduced price lunch (FRPL) students.
  • Yellow: Districts that had some learning loss in reading and/or math when compared to nearby districts. These districts varied more in populations of FRPL students.
  • Red: Districts that had dramatic learning losses in reading and/or math when compared to nearby districts. These districts typically have higher populations of FRPL students.

Learning loss calculations: 1 grade equivalent is based on a 9-month school year. Multiply the 2019-2022 change by 9 to get the number of months. For example, a .89-grade equivalent would be an 8-month loss.

Economic loss numbers by district: “Mean Lost Income” is the expected lost income per K-12 student based on their math losses and the National Bureau of Economic Research’s previously released lifetime earnings calculation; “Total Loss Income” is this value multiplied by the 2020-21 enrollment of the district.
